Who is Shayla Hacker?
Who Is Shayla Hacker eBook Evan Kilgore
Hard book to talk about - hard book to read, for that matter. I admit I quit about 3/4 of the way through -- although I'm not quire sure why, except that I just lost interest. (Maybe an even better question is why I didn't quit sooner. That's a possibility too)No question, the characters are interesting. Good writing -- the dialog is good. The plot device -- all these people seeking Shayla Hacker, and even they aren't sure why -- is interesting in theory.
I think Stephen King could have pulled it off. There's that tickling of horror, that whiff of the supernatural. Something funny is going on. Something isn't right. The Guru coulda done it.
But first-timer Kilgore -- a mere 20 years old -- hasn't quite got the power of a Stephen King. When a reader gets 3/4 of the way through the book, and STILL nothing is revealed about "Shayla Hacker" then most of us will have to wonder why we keep reading. So okay, the five sets of characters all feel this supernationat tug, or whatever, to go find this woman. But we don't feel that "tug". We have to rely on what they feel -- and it wasn't enough. It got old.
Far be it from me to give advice to someone who managed to get this book published: but I think you have to give us, the reader, some reason to care who she is. The mystery goes on too long -- good writing is good writing, but you need a little better plot. Just a hint of who she is, why we should give a damn. Then maybe we'd follow your characters into -- whatever -- to help find her too.
As it was, it just wasn't worth it.

Who Is Shayla Hacker eBook Evan Kilgore Reviews
I would imagine that if Stephen King or Dean Koontz could think back to the start of their writing careers and pick a story that was truly different and very entertaining, they would like to have written "Who Is Shayla Hacker". However, Evan Kilgore beat them to the publishing world.
Greg Klein is a loner. He receives a call from a young woman, pleading for help.
Jackie Savage is a high school student whose brother fails to pick her up at school so she decides to find out what became of him.
Terry Young is conflicted about his upcoming marriage. He goes to his attic and takes a photo from an old box. He knows the girl in the photo will haunt him for the rest of his life.
Det. Joe Malloy is retiring. His replacement asks him to tell about the one case that still bothers him. He has her photo but who is she?
Debbie Wendell finds a jewelry box in the ventilation duct at the airport. She knows it's valuable but whose is it?
Evan Kilgore winds the story of these and other characters in a fine web as they search for Shayla Hacker. Characters appear and disappear. A person sits next to Debbin on a plane and then vanishes. Greg gets another call from the young woman and authorities arrive and question him as to how he knows her and demanding he leave her alone.
The story is addictive as is the hunt for Shayla Hacker. It is hard to put the novel down. Kilgore has written it as if he were a conductor in a masterpiece of writing.
Don't miss this one!
